F. 11:27-12:12 JESUS DEFENDS HIS AUTHORITY
1. 11:27-33 JESUS' AUTHORITY QUESTIONED
a. 11:27-28 TEMPLE RULERS QUESTION JESUS
Kai ERchon-tai PAlin eis Ie-roSOlu-ma: kai en tohi-eROpe-ri-paTOUNtos auTOU,
And they come again to Jerusalem: and as he was walking in the temple,
ERchon-tai pros auTON hoi ar-chi-eREIS, kai hoi gram-maTEIS, kai hoi presBUte-roi,
the chief priests come unto him, and the scribes, and the elders,
kai Ele-gon auTO, En POIa e-xouSIa TAUta poiEIS?
28and said to him, By what authority do you these things?
eTIS soi Edo-ken ten e-xouSIan [1849]TAUten HIna TAUta poiES?
or who gave you this :authority to do these?
b. 11:29 JESUS COUNTERS WITH HIS OWN QUESTION
ho de IeSOUS EIpen auTOIS, E-pe-roTEsohuMAS HEna LOgon,
And :Jesus said to them, I will ask you one question,
kai a-poKRItheTE moi, kai eRO huMIN en POIa e-xouSIa TAUta poiO.
and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
c. 11:30 The baptism of :John, was it from heaven, or from men? answer me.

d. 11:31 THEIR REASONING CONCERNING JESUS' QUESTION
kai di-e-loGIzon-to [1256] pros he-auTOUS, LEgon-tes, E-AN EIpo-men,
And they reasoned with themselves, saying, if we shall say,
Ex ou-raNOU; eREI, Di-A ti oun ouk e-piSTEUsa-te auTO?
From heaven; he will say, Why then did you not believe him?
e. 11:32 THEIR FURTHER REASONING
alLA EIpo-men, Ex anTHROpon? e-phoBOUNto [5399] ton OCHlon:
But shall we say, From men? they feared the crowd:
HApan-tes gar EIchon ton IoAnen ONtos HOti proPHEtes [5396] en.
For all truly held :John to be a prophet.
f. 11:33a And they answered :Jesus andsay, We know not.

g. 11:33b And :Jesus says to them. Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

2. 12:1-12 PARABLE OF THE HOUSEHOLDER
a. 12:1a And he began to speak to them in parables.
kai ERxa-to auTOIS en pa-ra-boLAIS [3850]laLEIN.
b. 12:1b A VINEYARD PREPARED
Am-peLOna [290] ANthro-pos ePHUteu-sen [5452], kai pe-riEthe-ken [4060] phragMON [5418],
A man planted a vineyard, and set a hedge about it,
kai Oru-xen [3736] hu-poLEni-on [5276], kai o-koDOme-sen [3618] PURgon [4444],
and dug a winepress pit, and built a tower,
kai eXEde-to auTON ge-orGOIS [1092], kai a-peDEme-sen.
and let it out to husbandmen, and went into another country.
c. 12:2 FRUITS OF THE VINEYARD SOUGHT
kai aPEstei-len pros tous ge-orGOUS to kaiRO DOUlon
And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a bondman
HIna paRA ton ge-orGON LAbe aPO ton karPON tou am-peLOnos.
that he receive from the husbandmen of the fruits of the vineyard.
d. 12:3 And they took him, andbeat him, and sent himaway empty.
kai laBONtes auTON, Edei-ran [1194], kai aPEstei-lan keNON [1756].
e. 12:4 MORE BONDMEN MISTREATED
kai PAlin aPEstei-len pros auTOUS ALlon DOUlon;
And again he sent unto them another bondman;
ka' 'KEInon e-ke-phaLIo-san [2775], kai eTIma-san [821].
and him they wounded in the head and handled shamefully.
f. 12:5 MISTREATMENT MULTIPLIED
kai ALlon aPEstei-len; ka' 'KEInon aPEKtei-nan [615]:
And he sent another; and him they killed:
kai polLOUS ALlous; hous men DEron-tes, hous de a-pok-tenNUNtes.
and many others; beating some, and killing some.
g. 12:6 HOPE THAT HIS SON WILL BE RECEIVED
Eti HEna EIchen, huiON a-ga-peTON [27]: aPEstei-len AUton EScha-ton [2078] pros auTOUS,
He had yet one, a beloved son: he sent him last unto them,
LEgon, [HOti] En-troPEson-tai [1788] ton huiON mou.
saying, [that] They will reverence my :son.
h. 12:7 THE EVIL PLAN OF THE HUSBANDMEN
eKEInoi de hoi ge-orGOI pros he-auTOUS EIpan [HOti], HOU-TOS es-tin ho kle-roNOmos [2818];
But those :husbandmen said among themselves [that], This is the heir;
DEUte, a-pokTEIno-men auTON, kai heMON EStai he kle-ro-noMIa [2817].
come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be ours.
i. 12:8 And they took andkilled him, and cast him forth out of the vineyard.

j. 12:9 THE JUDGMENT
ti poiEsei ho KUri-os tou am-peLOnos? eLEUse-tai kai a-poLEsei [622]
What will the lord of the vineyard do? he will come and destroy
tous ge-orGOUS, kai DOsei ton am-peLOna ALlois.
the husbandmen, and will give to others the vineyard.
k. 12:10-11 INSIGHT FROM SCRIPTURE
ouDE ten graPHEN TAUten aNEGno-te: LIthon hon a-pe-doKIma-san [593] hoi oi-ko-doMOUNtes [3618],
Have you not read even this :scripture: A stone which the builders rejected,
HOUtos e-geNEthe eis ke-phaLEN [2776] goNIas [1137] ;
The same was made head of thecorner;
paRA KuRIou eGEne-to HAUte, kai EStin thau-masTE [2298] en oph-thalMOIS heMON?
11This was from theLord, And it is marvelous in our eyes?
l. 12:12 THE ANGER OF THE TEMPLE RULERS
kai eZEtoun auTON kraTEsai [2292]; kai e-phoBEthe-san ton OCHlon,
And they sought to seize him; and they feared the crowd,
EGno-san [1097] gar HOti pros auTOUS ten pa-ra-boLEN EIpen: kai aPHENtes auTON, aPELthan.
for they perceived that he spoke the parable against them: and they left him, andwent away.
G. 12:13-17 QUESTION OF THE TRIBUTE MONEY - HERODIANS
a. 12:13 A TRAP SET FOR JESUS
kai a-poSTELlou-sin pros auTON ti-nas ton Pha-riSAIon
And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees
kai ton He-ro-di-aNON [2265], HIna auTON aGREUso-sin [64] LOgo.
and of the Herodians, that they might catch him in talk.
b. 12:14 THEIR TRIBUTE MONEY QUESTION
kai elTHONtes LEgou-sin auTO, DiDAska-le,
And when they came they say to him, Teacher,
OIda-men HOti a-leTHES ei, kai ou MElei [3199]soi peRI ou-deNOS;
We know that you are true and do not care for anyone;
ou gar BLEpeis eis PROso-pon anTHROpon, all' ep' a-leTHEIas ten hoDON tou TheOU diDAskeis [1321]:
for you do not regard theface of men, but of a truth teach the way of :God:
Exe-stin DOUnai KENson KAIsa-ri, e ou?
Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?
c. 12:15a Shall we give, or not give? DOmen, emeDOmen?
d. 12:15b JESUS PREPARES A COUNTER-QUESTION
ho de, eiDOS auTON ten huPOkri-sin [5272], EIpen auTOIS,
But he, knowing their :hypocrisy, said to them,
TI me peiRAze-te [3165]? PHEreTE moi deNAri-on, HIna Ido.
Why do you try me? bring me a shilling, that I see it.
e. 12:16a And they brought it. hoi de Eneg-kan.
f. 12:16b And he says to them, Whose this :image and the inscription?
g. 12:16c And they said to him, Caesar's. hoi de EIpan auTO, KAIsa-ros.
h. 12:17a And :Jesus said, Render to Caesar the thingsof Caesar, and to :God the thingsof :God.
ho de IeSOUS EIpen, Ta KAIsa-ros aPOdo-te KAIsa-ri, kai ta tou TheOU toTheO.
i. 12:17b And they marveled greatly at him. kai e-xeTHAUma-zon [2296]ep' auTO.
NOTE: 11:27-33 - Jesus' Authority Questioned. All of Jesus' wisdom, according to His own testimony, came from His Father by the Holy Spirit. No wonderthe Scribes and Pharisees found it impossible to defeat Him in reasoning and argument! But think of it this way: Jesus counseled His disciples notto think ahead of time how to answer when brought before councils and opposers. He promised the Spirit of His Father would give them words of wisdom with which to answer at the very time needed. And was that not what the Father did for His beloved Son?
- 12:1-12 - Then led by His Father, Jesus immediately challenged His religious opposers with a parable - so cutting in its application - that none of these opposers were in any doubt but that it was intended for them.
The Father sent prophets and righteous men to seek justice and righteousness from His people Israel who He had planted as a vineyard in the land He gave them. He finally sent Jesus, His only begotten Son, whom they crucified. Is it any wonder that for 1900 years the nation with its leaders was scattered? Nowsince 1948 they are back in the land God gave them 3400 years ago. He also restored to them their language after a similar time lapse. So - the people, their language and God's land to them - have been restored to them in such a way as has neverbeen heard of before. And - they have been restored in unbelief! But - according to the faithful covenantof God to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and David - as soon as Christ returns and hears their cries and wails of sorrow for what they did to Him at His First Coming - then- the remnant of the nation will be born in a day!
12:13-17 - Question of the Tribute Money. But Jesus' opposers - the Pharisees and Herodians - are stilldetermined to defeat Him in argument. This time the contest is over whether Jews should pay tribute to Caesar or not? His answer with the illustration of a tribute coin didn't finish them - but it didcause them to marvel at His Wisdom! And - again - His Wisdom came from God His Father in the Spirit, with whom even as the :Son of man - He was One! J.A.W.
